Roadrunner – Beep….Beep

Greater Roadrunner – A member of the cuckoo family, the greater Roadrunner (Geococcyz californianus) is zygodactylous or two toes pointing forward and two backwards.  It has heavily streaked plumage, a bristly crest, short rounded wings an upward tilted tail, and long legs.  It rarely flies and has been clocked running at speeds up to 17 miles per hour.  It is said to have gotten its name in the Old West from running ahead of horse-drawn carriages.  Its diet of lizards, insects and spiders, small rodents, birds, and snakes is supplemented with occasional fruits and seeds.

The Nevada Division of State Parks, in partnership with the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation, is developing Nevada’s first-ever Statewide Trails Plan—and they’re asking for your input.

This plan will guide future trail development, access, and management statewide, supporting activities like walking and hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-highway vehicle (OHV) use. Your feedback—especially from communities historically underrepresented in planning—will help identify opportunities to connect neighborhoods, improve existing trails, expand equitable access, and protect Nevada’s natural resources.

The survey is open through November 30, 2026. Please share with your networks and encourage residents and visitors to participate: Links in the comments.
